We experience ourselves very differently in different languages. Words hold strong and varying meanings. Words represent different aspects of who we are in different languages.
Many, if not most, people struggle to express themselves when discussing personal matters. Especially those never revealed before. Speaking in a foreign language can be a further obstacle. Forgetting the correct words, and worrying about making mistakes can frustrate clients and obstruct therapy.
The Multiple Languages of Therapy
That is why our practice offers a wide range of languages to facilitate communication and create the most comfortable space for our clients. Currently, we provide therapy in French, Russian, English, Spanish, and Italian.
Some clients prefer only using one language in therapy, while others will want to use a combination of languages. Bilingual and/or multilingual people often find it easier to discuss some things in different languages. Sometimes, speaking in your language triggers feelings that you are not ready to face. It is important that you feel heard. That is why we at Expat Psychologist have an understanding of The Multiple Languages of Therapy.
